Trigger Point Injections Q & A
What are trigger point injections?
“Trigger points” are muscles that won’t relax. They sometimes form knots you can feel under your skin and cause recurrent, persistent pain in the surrounding area, especially in the low back, shoulders, and neck.
Trigger point injections are a procedure in which we use a very small needle to inject a solution into the trigger points in your muscles to relax these tense knots. This can also make it much easier for our chiropractors to give you a better adjustment for your condition.
The trigger point injections typically contain a local anesthetic, and we may also use sarapin, a natural plant-based extract that’s safe and effective for pain management. When we inject your knotted muscles with the solution, it causes them to relax and improves blood flow to the area, providing pain relief.
What areas of the body can benefit from trigger point injections?
Trigger point injections can potentially help any muscle in your body, and are particularly effective at treating the muscles in your:
- Neck and shoulders
- Upper, middle, and lower back
- Arms
- Legs
If chiropractic adjustments and other therapeutic methods are only relieving part of your pain, we may recommend trigger point injections as a complement to regular adjustments, corrective stretching, and massage therapy. Trigger point injections can also provide pain relief from tension headaches and fibromyalgia pain.
How is a trigger point injection performed?
We administer the trigger point injections in our office. An appointment usually takes just a few minutes and typically involves a series of injections in the affected muscle in order to release it and alleviate your pain.
We can also treat more than one muscle group at the same time, so if you have pain in your low back and your shoulder, we can treat both areas at once, so you get prompt, effective pain relief.
We may recommend a series of injections every couple of weeks over the course of a few months for optimal results. As with all of our services, we develop an individual, customized treatment plan for your specific conditions.
Are trigger point injections safe?
Yes, trigger point injections are generally safe, but you should alert us if you have any known allergies to the anesthetic ingredients.
